Villanova University employed an outside graphics organization to design
its first layer Web pages three years ago. While the design was excellent,
it was a technology nightmare. Everything was a single GIF file and we had
a terrible time adding menu items. Last year we did our own design - in
house - that is completely flexible with individualized homepages based on
students and faculty schedules and preferences. All modules are linked to
our backend systems to ensure the information is always up-to-date.
A nice looking Web page doesn't cut it any more, it is the integration with
the backend, ability to customize and providing relevant and up-to-date
information that counts.
The only people who know how to do this are those that understand the
University's systems and know Java, Perl, etc. which are the IT folks.
