I would say that "career IT" has always had a focussed, professional planning and
operational approach to its role within a large organization, and to the recognition that
our business is "information processing". The changes in nomeclature from "data
processing" (1970's) to "management information systems" (1980's) and today
"information technology" were made from within the IT profession - usually long before
others understood the import. A lack of "connection" can occur from either side of
points to be connected, and many organizations may have been slow in the past to
acknowledge that IT is an essential, qualitative part of the overall delivery of their
"mission and goals".
