Here's yet another model:
Denison University provides each FT faculty with a $1,000/yr
discretionary fund. Those who wish to upgrade from the standard-issued
desktop computer to a portable may do so, but any differential in cost
is made up from these discretionary funds.
For those who elect to buy the portable, we recommend a separate
monitor, keyboard and docking station which increases the cost but which
nearly all have found useful.
The capital cost differences (for both Dell and Macintosh) are not large
(<$1,000) but support costs are higher since we don't service portable
hardware on-site. There's also the cost/risk of loss and damage, and
the need for policies that clearly define responsibilities in this area.

Subject: [CIO] Desktop vs Notebook
We are currently working on a policy to set a standard of who should
a notebook versus a desktop computer for faculty and staff.
If you have anything to share that would be helpful, we would appreciate
