Our Roxio representative contacted us about a VLP licensing
program which would "allow" us to include Roxio in our standard
image. As you can see from the exchange below, Roxio's position
is that the OEM license provided to us with our systems does not
allow us to use a tool like Ghost to reload Roxio onto those systems
via the network.
Have any of you dealt with this kind of a restriction? I find this
restriction to be a signifcant interference to our work.
Reply from Roxio:
You can reload the OEM software on that machine but not as part of a
saved image. You can do updates to the software on that machine, but not
push them out across the network which means you will need to either
bring the system to the helpdesk or have a tech do a desk side visit.
Basically the OEM license will give you a one to one relationship with
the software and the machine.
A lot of organizations like to have one image for their entire entity,
so if a machine has a problem they can simply push an new image across
the network. That is where our VLP upgrade comes into place. We give you
the ability to truly manage the machines properly, and keep all your
machines on the same version and push those images across the network,
freeing up the need for a desk side visit.
My note to Roxio:
Do I understand that if we buy a computer with a licensed copy of
that we are not allowed to reload Roxio in the event we need to reload
the operating system on that computer (due to hard drive failure,
software corruption, or operating system upgrade)?
The original note from Roxio:
I have recently taken over your account and wanted to send you some
information about our New Volume Licensing Program (VLP) for Easy CD
Creator Basic. With the release of Easy CD & DVD Creator 6, I wanted
see if you were interested in learning more about our Easy CD Creator
Basic VLP upgrade and see if the benefits of this program are
that you would want to take advantage of.
As you may know many OEM licenses are so restrictive that they do not
allow the corporate or education environment the ability to truly
their computers properly. Many OEM licenses (including Roxio's) do not
allow for the inclusion of the OEM software in images or for
or network distribution or any mass distribution of updates and
Roxio's Easy CD Creator Basic VLP allows you to upgrade your existing
OEM software license to a license that removes the OEM restrictions
gives you the flexibility you need to truly manage your environment.
With our Basic VLP you are have a simplified license management and
support solution. One license, one image, equals less maintenance and
support. You own the Basic VLP license so the software does not end of
life with the machine. We give you the flexibility you need to create
an image and distribute it across your network. As new PCs and burners
are shipped you can ensure that they have the same software and
as the rest of your environment. We also offer our Basic VLP customers
premium support and maintenance program that keeps you constantly
updated with the latest version enhancements and product upgrades.
Regardless of the software you currently use, Easy CD Creator 3, 4, 5,
Nero or Record Now, Roxio's Basic VLP upgrade is a solution that can
truly benefit your organization.
Please do not hesitate to contact me when you have a free minute to
discuss this in detail.
