Dickinson College has been doing online freshmen registration for 2 or 3
years using the same online Datatel system that the rest of the student
body uses. We issue userids to them early in the summer and collect
most of what used to be collected on paper forms electronically.
The online registration has some detractors within the faculty. The
main issue is the loss of the opportunity to provide advising to the
students before they embark on their academic career. Students can
still add/drop when they arrive on campus, but a valuable opportunity is
lost since there is less incentive for the new freshmen to meet with
their faculty advisor.
The online registration affects upperclassmen as well. They find that
spaces are held for freshmen in some courses and they end up on the wait
list for much of the summer until the incoming class registers.
