Sorry to be so late to chime in, usual excuses. We are seriously
considering outsourcing our Resnet to an outside contractor. We have
practically given up on efforts to manage and control viruses and worms,
peer-to-peer, etc, and my staff is taxed to its limits. IMHO, the model we
use, shaping aggregate bandwidth to control P2P, is no longer viable. Many
of our students want to use the net as much (or more) for entertainment than
for academic endeavor. Who can blame them since that's what they've become
accustomed to at home via RoadRunner or other broadband access providers.
So, we're looking into a partnership with Apogee Telecom. Their model is to
provide bandwidth under individual SLAs with each student. Each student is
guaranteed a fixed amount of bandwidth for his/her connection to use how
ever the student sees fit. A minimum amount of bandwidth is available free
and students have the option to upgrade to one of two higher tiers, for a
monthly service fee. Apogee provides call center and network support as
well as move-in services to help students get connected to the net. They
also foot the bill of upgrading the network infrastructure and Internet
connection to "over build" the network to handle increased demand.
If anyone out there has had experience with Apogee or other similar
services, or is using the SLA approach to controlling bandwidth, I'd
appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.
