Linfield makes little strategic use of the technology Acacia claims patent
infringement on. Their notice of infringement mentions research saying we
do. Interestingly, when I called about that research they provided one
url, which turns out to be a student posting a 30 second clip taken with
his digital camera! They say they are not interested in student use, by the
way, just institutional use.
We do use this technology in minor ways. ITS has asked our community to
refrain from use till The presidents advisory council rules on this matter.
I've suggested the advisory council make this response official till this
matter makes its way through the courts and that we should join the legal
effort headed by Johns Hopkins mentioned in this list earlier.
It is interesting to see what the market thinks. Acacia stock took a dive
mid July. I believe this coincided with court rulings partially, but not
totally, ruling against them. But they have been holding steady ever since
and still outperforming the market compared to their initial offering by a
significant margin .
