We have partnered with Purchasing (they run our surplus program).
Any computers being sent to surplus are delivered to our
"rehabilitation" area where they are evaluated. If the computer is
usable on campus it is refurbished. If it is below the "threshold"
we scrub the hard drive by writing lotsa bits on it (VERY VERY
IMPORTANT - reformatting the hard drive leaves almost all the data!).
If the hard drive is not accessible it is destroyed. I was surprised
that few people mentioned the data scrubbing (maybe it is taken for

approval from the state). Scrap is sold to recycling outfits.
We too pay for monitor disposal but we also offer used but
working monitors at a fixed price during the surplus sale.
