Colleagues, Enoch Remick has provided the information on why the term
legal is used.... see below and attached...
Hope all is well - happy to help clarify things. I've attached a better
explanation of what's happening. On a going forward basis, customers
must now leverage these service packs for deployments as a court has
found certain portions of code within Office Pro 2003, Access 2003,
Office Pro XP and Access 2002 infringe a third-party patent. We are
making the revised versions of these products available with the
allegedly infringing code replaced.
Hope that helps.

Subject: [LICENSING] MSO Pro 2003 SP2 required for legal reasons?
We are enrolled in Campus Agreement and when I received my monthly MS
disks, I also received the following notice:
"Enclosed is a CD containing Service pack 2 (SP2) updates. If you are
using MS Office Pro Edition 2003 or MS Office Access 2003, installation
of SP2 is required for legal reasons. On a going forward basis, please
ensure SP2 is installed on all of your computers that run MS Office Pro
Edition 2003 or MS Office Access 2003. To find out more about SP2,
please visit our site at
Ok, did I miss something? What are the "legal reasons" to which they are
referring? I searched Microsoft's site for additional information, but
to no avail. We strongly encourage our users to install MS patches and
updates, not because of legal issues, but for security reasons. Thanks.
