In the near future, our campus will be moving into a new building with
an extra 6 computer labs with a total increase of 154 seats. We are
centralized in our management of most computer labs on campus and this
will bring our total to around 1200 workstations on campus.
It seems like only yesterday when I was personally managing workstations
via sneakernet. Over the last few years here, I've leveraged a lot of
software tools to manage computer lab workstations. Even with these
measures, I'm concerned about workstation-to-support staff ratios.
After this building goes online, we'll be looking at a 600:1 ratio since
I have two administrators dedicated to providing both front-line and
back-end support for the entire software stack on these workstations.
While they diagnose hardware problems, they don't actually do the
swapping of the hardware.
We certainly need to do something to address the growth this coming
year, but in so doing I was wondering what comparative ratios of
workstation to admins exist at other locations.
Thanks for any input,
