To start, we've found two resources at Educause to be very useful.
In terms of services, we review the Student Guide to Evaluating Information Technology on Campus -
Also, we participate in the annual Educause Core Data Service. We then use the online database to slice the database into relevant groups (like a list of technical peers) and compare data. That service is at:
The Campus Computing Survey is another tool we use annually for comparisons. There will be a session on this at the annual Educause conference in October:
We do an annual comparison to these tools and produce a detailed report on "what is the state of IT?". We pretty much do it to please ourselves and identify trends and our relationship to trends.
Now, the frustration... I produce this report and compare what we are doing in detail. This year our president asked me for a "full inventory of what IT is doing, the functions and projects, and how it compares to other universities." So I have him a copy of the report, with a nice brief executive summary for the total picture. He had several comments: it was too long, it didn't tell him anything, and nothing comes together in a cohesive picture. Not a single positive statement. Don't know that it means anything for anyone else, though.
