I know that anyone who could solve this problem once and for all would
be wealthy beyond measure - but I'm hoping someone has found a better
way to manage programming workflows. We have two programmers who run
our ERP system, and they both do a mix of production support and project
work. The project stakeholders always want a date by which their
projects will be done, and then they or others compromise the date by
piling on production support work and/or changing the scope of the
project. Sometimes scope is also increased by system issues (i.e.
unforeseen complexity in how something works). Part/maybe most of our
problem is definitely attributable to poor up-front specs development.
Obviously software won't fix this, but has anyone found a canned
framework, possibly supported by software, that works well? We have an
open source ticket tracking system (http://www.liberum.org/) that is
great for small support tasks, but it doesn't support management of
complex projects. I like the idea of open source tools, but would
consider any recommendations.
