I find myself in the middle of a number of opinions about the need or value
for a Computer & Information Literacy Gen Ed course, which we currently do
not offer. I came to my current private Liberal Arts institution from a
large state institution where a Computer Literacy course was required, and I
believe that it is needed even more today. The assumption is that CS would
drive the Tech piece, the Library wants to drive the Information literacy
piece, which is fine, but I am also getting a lot of requests from Student
Life to deal with the dangers of Social Networking, etc. The social issues
arenšt so much about beware of what you post, but instead about students
making poor choices about how they use these forums to deal with anger or
personal issues. Maybe this needs to be driven by counseling.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback you might offer regarding how your
institutions may be offering that typical Computer Literacy Course but have
tried to adapt it to our new online social generation of students.
