St. Norbert College handles retirees like alumni - we convert their
email account upon retirement. It has a reduced quota but otherwise is
handled equivalently to a staff/faculty account - same address, same
functionality, etc. Accounts are disabled after 6 months of non-use.
This is also a network account; retirees may continue to use our network
if they so desire.
This is only for folks who retire; we do not offer this to those who
separate from the College for other reasons (new job, etc.).
We've just converted to Zimbra for our email service. Imap client of
choice (Thunderbird, etc.) may be used in addition to the Zimbra web
We are converting to Mailman for list service. We have a retirees
broadcast list, and retirees may subscribe to public lists. Haven't run
across a request for a retiree to host a list; would probably honor one
if it made sense.
No electrons were harmed in the making of this message, although some
may have been temporarily inconvenienced.

However, we are considering whether we should offer the same account as the staff use or have to switch to a separate new account. The benefit of a separate account is the staff would no longer receive official mail by accident and the important files stored in his email account has an official "cut-over" day (i.e. either transferred to his/her successor, or being deleted). The disadvantage is of course the retired staff have to switch to a new email address which is a little bit inconvenience. We use Exchange system so unless we set up complicated rules, the retired staff will have access to the mailing list designed for staff as well.
