Top Ten issues defined by Educause and none of them address CIO Leadership.
Is IT strategic or tactical?
Do we need more or less governance?
What is the role of IT in the future?
Are we ready?
Is the staff ready?
What about cloud computing?
How are services marketed?
Is IT part of the academic mission?
All of this comes under leadership. Is the CIO ready to lead the institution into the future along with other senior officers and deliver a message that brings everyone there? All of these issues listed above fall on the CIOs shoulders. This is your new job or it should be.
How many CIOs are in a position to lead? What should you do to put yourself in a leadership role? Do you have the position, knowledge and skills to lead an organization? Are you invited to the table? Are you an equal partner? If you are not, what have you done today to convince everyone that you deserve that role?
Here is a question I ask my staff.
