Hi Ben,

So sorry for the delay in responding. I think a technical review would be most helpful. Thank you!

Sharyne,

Absolutely. I’d need to bring in some of the team that was closer to the migration. Would you be looking at a more technical review, or more of a business/strategic overview? And would anybody else want to join the call?

Ben,

I would be VERY interested in a discussion of you Identity and Access Management solution/migration. There are so many layers and we have been addressing via small initiatives. Would you be open to a discussion?

Thanks,
Sharyne

Harvard’s first Enterprise system to start a Cloud migration was our Identity and Access Management system. It needed a complete overhaul, and when it became clear how much it would cost to get the redundancy and resiliency that we required in our on-premises datacenters, it was decided that it should be deployed in the Cloud. Not exactly the system one would choose if one were going for the easy migration! Having said that, they started with an application called Connections, which is an internal directory application that would result in little to no impact if it had hiccups.

As our main Cloud program was spinning up, the university homepage was the first migration. It was done as a complete technological overhaul, and while the migration was successful, the upkeep required ended up being so high that we eventually moved to a PaaS provider instead.

Our Library Technology Services group had their own Cloud migration program. They had an existing set of innovation projects that they used to cut their teeth on the Cloud. They were specifically selected because they were non-enterprise, low-risk applications.

Storage as a project is something we still haven’t quite figured out, and it’s unfortunate, because storage hardware is a great example of an avoidable expense if you can solve the problem.

Hi Michelle - could you also share your public information on your CloudFirst program with me?
I am interested in looking at what other schools transitioned to the cloud especially the ERP system.

The central website and about 50% of the other websites are published from our CMS which is T4. The remaining websites are published from locally managed Dreamweaver instances.

We used a local partner to do the AWS implementation and they also manage the platform on a 24*7 basis. The main driver for the project was to move to a platform which was managed on a 24*7 basis, in house we only have 9-5 M-F resources with some limited on call. The move was very successful and performance & uptime are good.

I am happy to answer more questions if you want to contact me me directly.

Colleagues,

I posted this recently to the CCCG Slack group, but in the interests of casting the widest possible net to capture the largest number of great ideas, I’m cross posting a couple of places. My apologies for filling your inbox.

To date usage of the web-scale public cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) at Indiana University has been limited to small-scale experimentation, a targeted PaaS service or two, development by a few cloud-savvy developers and of course researchers forging ahead of central IT. In an effort to bring together subject area experts (e.g., security, networking, ops, etc.) to start learning in hands-on detail how the public cloud works, I am gathering ideas for a starter enterprise project to build out. We've kicked around things like the central website, CAS, or maybe storage. I'd like to know what others have done or, in hindsight would have done, as this kind of team learning project. What have you got?

To be clear, I’m not talking about the process of building a cloud team. I am just looking for ideas of projects that could serve as a focus of such a team. Did you have the luxury of experimentation or were you driven by crisis or deadline? What project, in short, provided the best learning experience for the broadest group of roles?

Thanks for any and all ideas!

Bob Flynn
