Hi, Janice.

At the University of Arkansas we use many different chat programs (we recently started using Cisco Spark and some use Jabber) but Slack is one of the more common and one of the favorites. We use it for small group project communication, current IT issues that need to be addressed asap (network issues, login issues, wireless, etc), and general issues that spring up that people all over campus need to be aware of. We have a channel that all of IT on campus is a part of that allows for all of the groups to help with problems. It is particularly good when members of a team are all over campus and do not have a chance to chat in person. We use it for document sharing, questions, immediate issues that need to be addressed and as a quick way to get in contact with someone.

I highly recommend it. It also, at least on our campus, seems to increase a sense of camaraderie when everyone knows what is going on.

best,

Kathryn

Hi Janice,

We've been using Slack for some time now and it has proven to be a valuable resource for us, especially for emergency notifications within our team. We've used some of the integrations to automate part of our internal new hire process and we also use the email integration to keep our slack channel members in the loop on some important emails.

You can get approved as an educational institution and there is a significant discount, down to $12 per year per user for the standard plan.

We made the move to the standard plan from the free version about 6 months ago and it's been the primary mode of our team communications since.

I'm happy to talk more about this offline, if you like.

Best,
Frank

Hi,

I'm wondering how the efforts to try Slack for group communications worked out (from Spring of 2017)? Were there a lot of listserv members joining in and actively participating? I did not have a chance to sign up (or at least I cannot easily find indications that I did so).

Part of the reason I am asking is because one of my users is asking if we can use Slack here. I did notice that there is a "freebie" option that does not have many options and then two additional tiers that have pricing (the higher tier looking to be $12.50 per month (annually) or $15 per month - but allows CAS/SSO).

For those of you using Slack for other purposes at your institutions, how is that working out and what are some of the successful uses?

Thanks in advance for reading and responding.

Best,

Janice
